THE HISTORY OF RMR PART IIIThe Fabulous SeventiesBy Tom Scott The RMR events of the early 70's were Rallyes, Autocrosses, Tours, Concours, Tech Sessions and a limited number of Driver's Schools, usually at CDR and Aspen. The primary difference between those events and those of today is the number held. In the early 70's, only one event was held per month. In 1971, RMR boasted a total membership of 250; PCA had a total membership of 7,541. The RMR Christmas Party cost $4.30 per person, which included tax and tip! By this time, Porsche had solved most, but not all, of the problems associated with the 911, which was first introduced in 1964. The total Porsche production for 1970 was 4,618 911's and 9,035 914's. Larry Meyers and his 1958 E Production Speedster had won the Midwest SCCA races. The car could be purchased for $3,800. Also in 1971, a first and last event in the history of mankind occurred - Bev and Kent Early won 1st and last place at a Rallye, the Econorallye! The 70's saw the introduction of many new model Porsches: the 914 in 1970, the 924 in 1976, the 930 in 1975, the 911SC in 1978 and a variety of other 911 variations including the Carrera RS and RSR. The factory dominated World Manufacturer's Championship racing with the 908, 910 and infamous 917. RMR and it's members claimed more than their fair share of national honors including Newsletter in 1971; 1st in class 3, membership of over 200; 1973 - The Heinmiller Award for the best Newsletter in PCA, Frank Barrett, editor; 1974 - Best in Class 3; 1977 - The Heinmiller Award, Anne Barrett, editor; 1978 and 1979, again the Heinmiller Award, Ted Shaw, editor. The Region was selected as the PCA Region of the Year in 1975 under Chick Misura's presidential leadership and in 1976, Sandi Misura received the PCA Enthusiast of the Year. RMR hosted the 1978 Parade in Aspen under the direction of Norm Martin's able leadership, a Parade which is still talked about whenever the "old timers" gather together. Continue |
